Vendor Spotlight: Kipferl brings a taste of Austria to London

This week we’re introducing one of our newest vendors, Kipferl. Kipferl is an Austrian Restaurant and Patisserie located in London’s buzzing Angel district. It offers a selection of traditional and authentic, hand-made Austrian cakes, including the well-known Sachertorte and Apfelstrudel, along with a full restaurant menu.

Their offer of amazing, traditional cakes includes celebration cakes, gluten-free and vegan options and most importantly brings the traditional Austrian flavours straight to London. We had a chance to interview Hubert Zanier, the owner and founder of Kipferl, to learn more about the inspiration behind the business, his favourite menu item and much more. Read below to find out more about Kipferl!

Q: What’s the inspiration behind your business?
A: To bring Austrian hospitality to London!

Q: Where are you from and how has that shaped your business?
A: I’m from Austria and am very proud of my country. This shapes everything we do at Kipferl.

Q: How would you describe your food in 5 words?
A: Authentic, hearty, delicious, eclectic and unique. 

Q: What’s your favourite meal on your menu? And what item on your menu do you think represents your brand best?
A: The Sachertorte is not only my favourite but also our bestselling cake. And the Wiener Schnitzel is as close as it gets to eating in Austria.

Q: What’s the most underrated item on your menu?
A: The Bosnian Poppyseed Cake – it doesn’t look as “Instagrammable” as the other cakes but it’s incredibly juicy and tasty, and it is gluten-free.

Q: What’s your favourite part of working in this industry?
A: Making people happy with our food!

Q: What should we order from you when we want to celebrate?
A: One of our celebration cakes – they are perfect for any occasion and can be personalised with writing.

Q: What is your top tip for eating better?
A: More than ever you have to pick the right places when you eat out or order food, choose a place that really cares about their food and what they do.

Q: Is there anything you’d like to share that highlights what makes your business stand out?
A: We are the only authentic Austrian Patisserie and Restaurant in London. Most people in the UK have been to Austria skiing or on a trip to Vienna and I never heard anyone saying they didn’t eat well or didn’t have a good time there. Eating our food is like a little trip to Austria.

Q: What part of your business are you most passionate about and why?
A: Serving customers, and seeing how they react when they try our food. It gives me all the energy to go on and continue what I do.

Q: What’s the ingredient you always find yourself reaching for when you’re cooking at home?
A: Pumpkin seed oil from Austria. It’s a unique flavour that adds a special note to every salad, soup, stew, and even on vanilla ice cream. And it is very healthy. 

Q: What’s the best thing you’ve ever eaten?
A: Wiener Schnitzel at my favourite restaurant in Tirol.

Q: What are you up to when you’re not in the kitchen?
A: Trying out new restaurants in London and travelling the world (and also trying out new food there)!
