Since 2004, Nusa Kitchen have proudly brought generations-old South East Asian recipes to the hungry office workers of London. With six locations spanning Old Street to Adams Court, you’ll be hard pressed to find any foodie in the capital who hasn’t had the pleasure of ordering from their menu.
This week in our Vendor Spotlight feature, we were fortunate enough to have a chat with Nusa’s CEO, Hubert Zanier. He told us all about their history, why their food is so special, and even shed some light on the secret behind their renowned Malayan Beef Rendang.
Meet Nusa Kitchen
Q: What’s the inspiration behind Nusa Kitchen?
A: Nusa Kitchen wants to bring healthy, hearty and authentic food from Southeast-Asia to the heart of London. Our founder, who grew up in Singapore, moved to London and missed the freshly cooked food she was used to buying from street stalls all over the small city-state. Unable to find that in London, she opened Nusa Kitchen in 2004, and since then thousands of hungry City workers have enjoyed one of our handmade delights.
Q: Where are you from and how has that shaped your business?
A: I am from Austria, and food is an equally important part of our culture as it is in Southeast-Asia. Coming together with the family to eat is one of the most important things, and freshly cooked, hearty food is one of the most famous aspects of Austria.
Q: How would you describe the food from Nusa Kitchen in five words?
A: Tasty, hearty, healthy, authentic, diverse
Q: What’s your favourite meal on your menu?
A: Definitely our Malayan Beef Rendang. It cooks for 5 hours with a unique blend of spices and herbs. Like a little trip to Malaysia.
Q: What should we order from you when we…
…. feel indulgent?
A: Beef Rendang Rice Box.
… crave something healthy?
A: One of our weekly changing vegan Nusa Soups.
… want to celebrate?
A: Any of our dishes work if you want to celebrate with hearty, authentic Asian food.
Q: What’s your top tip for eating better at work?
A: If you can cook and bring your own food you know 100% what’s inside, if you can’t do that then choose something light, freshly cooked from a restaurant you trust.
Q: What’s the ingredient you always find yourself reaching for when you’re cooking at home?
A: Definitely fresh vegetables and a variety of Asian spices.
Q: What’s your favourite thing to do in your area?
A: Walking around the City of London with its diverse working population and different types of businesses.
Q: When you’re not in the kitchen…
A: I am out eating at other restaurants
Q: What are your post Covid-19 resolutions?
A: Focus on the essential, and enjoy every moment. You never know what the future brings, so you better live in the here and now.
