Tuck Food is an innovative catering company that makes a new recipe everyday with fresh, delicious ingredients from both Asian and European cuisines. For this week’s vendor spotlight we spoke to the founder of Tuck Food, Charlie Blennerhassett, to learn more about what he loves about food and his business.
Q: What’s the inspiration behind your business?
A: Over the course of my seven year career in advertising I chewed my way through thousands of mediocre sandwich platters, baked potatoes and other dodgy, desk-based working lunches. They were soulless.
I started Tuck to deliver delicious, fresh, authentic food, passionately created at an affordable price. Food is not a commodity like stationery. You can tell when it’s make by people who care and love what they do. We make it all from scratch. It’s unprocessed. The only process is goes through is the cooking process!
So Tuck is back – delivering wonderful fresh flavours, European classics, and contemporary Asian cuisine to thousands of West London desks every day.
Q: Where are you from and how has that shaped your business?
A: I’m a London boy – but born into a family where food was the heart of the home.
My mother is a chef. She started as a chalet host – then ended up providing Margaret Thatcher’s cabinet lunches on Thursdays and has been cooking at Downing Street for every prime minister since then. She inspired me and taught me food does not need to be fancy or fussy. It’s about good ingredients and passion. Fads come an go – but everyone loves the crowdpleasers, and that will never change.
Q: How would you describe your food in 5 words?
A: Fresh, Authentic, Passionately-Prepared Crowdpleasers.
Q: What’s your favourite meal on your menu?
A: I love our Thai Green Curry! I often choose this when I eat out in Thai restaurants and it makes me more confident that ours is one of the best in London.
Q: What should we order from you when…
…. we feel Indulgent?
A: Shepherd’s Pie
…. we crave something healthy?
A: Vietnamese noodle salad – crunch, healthy, raw veg – it is out of this world!
… we want to celebrate?
A: All our Indian curries are amazing.
Q: What is your top tip for eating better when at work?
A: Bring your own food from home!
Q: What’s the ingredient you always find yourself reaching for when you’re cooking at home?
A: Ginger and chilli.
Q: What’s your favourite thing to do in your area?
A: Swimming in the Tooting Bec lido, Serpentine, and Hampstead Ponds all year round. The colder the better! I love the cinema too – it’s a genuine escape for me.
Q: When you’re not in the kitchen…
A: I’m spending time with my wonderful family: my wife, Katherine, my son, Benjamin and my daughter, Robin.
Q: What are your post Covid-19 resolutions?
A: Go with the flow. Let go and follow my heart.
